One hundred years of Hermann Park—what better cause for celebration? Since 1914, the Park has been part of the family for generations growing up in Houston. Through the festivities of the year-long Centennial Celebration, everyone in the Houston community will have the chance to honor the special moments the Park has provided to a century’s worth of children and families, and commemorate the efforts made to preserve it for its next hundred years.

From temporary art installations to a family kite festival, special events all year long in 2014 will bring the community together and give visitors young and old memories that will last a lifetime. The Centennial Celebration will be a citywide effort, with many museums and cultural institutions partnering with the Conservancy on special programs, from lectures to musical performances.

Houston Area Public Golf Courses

Houston is the state's largest city in both size and geographic area. Because Houston covers such a large area, it straddles several different types of terrain. This environmental diversity is reflected in the cities golf courses, many of which incorporate the natural setting in their layouts. A variety of wooded areas, creeks, bayous, lakes, flatlands, rolling hills and more are part of Houston's top public golf courses. Whether it is downtown Houston or the city's north, south, east or west sides, there is always a great course close by when in Houston. And, when you're looking for a different challenge from your regular course, you can always find it be heading to opposite side of town.

1. Tour 18

The unique concept of using hole layouts from 18 of America's top golf courses to make one great course has come to be known as Tour 18. This concept proved so popular there are now two Tour 18 courses in Texas - Dallas and Houston.

2. Hermann Park Golf Course

Located right in the heart of downtown Houston (adjacent to the Medical Center), Hermann Park Golf Course has offered an urban get-away since it first opened in 1922. This 18-hole course is part of the sprawling 407-acre Hermann Park. Its historic charm and convenient location continue to make Hermann Park Golf Course a popular spot for Houston area golfers.

3. Battleground Golf Course

Located in Deer Park, just 20 minutes from downtown Houston, the Battleground Golf Course offers an opportunity to play a round in a unique setting, as it is very near the site of the Battle of San Jacinto which won Texas its independence from Mexico.

4. Golf Club at Cinco Ranch

Located inside the Cinco Ranch community on Houston's west side, this popular course features more than four dozen bunkers and water hazards. Beyond the challenging course layout, Cinco Ranch also offers a first rate practice facility and player development program.

5. Cypresswood Golf Club

Earning Golf Digest's "Best New Golf Course" distinction upon its opening in 1998, Cypresswood Golf Club is situated in a heavily wooded area of north Houston, very near Bush International Airport. Cypresswood offers two 18-hole courses -- The Traditions Course and The Cypress Course.

6. Greatwood Golf Course

Located just off Highway 59 South, outside of Sugarland on Houston's southwest side, Greatwood Golf Club features a challenging 18 hole layout which includes tree lined fairways, numerous bunkers and lots of water.

7. Oakhurst Golf Club

Originally opened as Bentwood Country Club, Oakhurst changed its name during its extensive renovations in 2004. Today it is one of Houston's best daily fee courses. Located off Highway 59 just north of downtown Houston, Oakhurst is easy to get to and offers a challenging layout in a heavily wooded area.

8. Stephen F. Austin Golf Club

Set on a pecan tree farm along the Brazos River in historic San Felipe, Stephen F. Austin Golf Club is one of the most unique courses in the state. Although it is a short drive west of the city of Houston, a round at Stephen F. Austin Golf Club is well worth the trip.

9. Wedgewood Golf Course

Located in Conroe, just north of Houston, Wedgewood offers visitors a fun and challenging layout among Montgomery County's heavily wooded terrain.

10. Windrose Golf Club

Located on the northwest side of Houston, Windrose Golf Club has become a favorite place to play for Houston area golfers. The championship tees are set at an impressive 7,203 yards, while the forward tees are at a manageable 5,355, ensuring golfers of all levels can enjoy a round at Windrose Golf Club.

Zoo Lights to be a Signature Holiday Event

Every big city has a signature holiday light display. But Houston has been sorely lacking in this department--until this year.

In November the Houston Zoo will debut Zoo Lights, a family-oriented attraction that will transform the campus into a holiday wonderland complete with more than 300,000 LED lights, 15 miles of tree lighting and seasonal songs and stories. TXU Energy is the presenting sponsor for the event, which will run from Nov. 23 - Jan. 5.

Sip hot chocolate as you stroll through the Zoo and take in all the sights, including thousands of twinkling lights adorning the magnificent live oak trees, whimsical colorful projections over 15 feet tall, and life-size animated animal sculptures.

You'll also want to check out "Holly Berry," the 1958 Cadillac that's more than just your average vehicle. "Holly Berry" features vibrant lights that dance in time to joyful music.

During Zoo Lights, the Zoo will close at 5pm, with the last ticket sold at 4pm. The Zoo will reopen for Zoo Lights at 6pm, with the last ticket sold at 9pm, and the event ending at 10pm.
