Houston is home to several family attractions that cater to kids of all ages, and many of these destinations host special New Year's activities just for children and toddlers. While most attractions in Houston are closed on New Year's Day, many stay open all day and late into the night on New Year's Eve so that the whole family can count down to the new year doing something fun. From downtown Houston to the outskirts of the city, kids can celebrate the new year with fun and memorable activities and, in some cases, even learn something new.

The Ice at Discovery Green

The Ice at Discovery Green

Kids who love to go ice-skating can enjoy an open skate session on New Year's Eve at the Discovery Green ice rink. The ice rink stays open until 8 p.m. on New Year's Eve. It has a smaller toddler-only rink on site. The outdoor skating rink is decorated as a winter wonderland for the holiday season, and kids can skate to music and lights, enjoy hot cocoa and cookies, and snack on gourmet popcorn as part of the New Year's celebration.

Downtown Aquarium Houston

Downtown Aquarium Houston

The Downtown Aquarium Houston hosts a special themed event on New Year's Eve just for kids, and the characters and event change from year to year. Past events have included the characters Sharkey and Nero who play games and put on a live skit for the kids, as well as a kids ball drop, raffles and live music. Children and adults can pay for an all-day pass to the aquarium to enjoy the exhibits and take part in the New Year's Eve festivities.

Borders Bookstore Kids' Party

The Borders Bookstore in Houston hosts a different themed kids-only party on the afternoon of New Year's Eve each year. Kids can take part in crafts and fun educational activities, spend time playing with toys and settle in for a New Year's-themed storytelling session. The event is free and open to kids of all ages.

Children's Museum

The Children's Museum holds an atypical New Year's celebration with a ball drop and countdown at noon on New Year's Eve. The event is designed for children who want to take part in a fun party with friends and family, play with artificial sparklers and enjoy live music and entertainment. Visitors to the museum can also spend a part of the day exploring the exhibits and interactive displays.
